CLINICAL NEUROPHYSIOLOGY FELLOWSHIP

Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Neurology offers a one year ACGME-accredited clinical neurophysiology fellowship. Three positions are offered each year. Two positions have a focus on EEG and epilepsy and one position has a focus on EMG and neuromuscular disorders. All fellows are exposed and taught the entire range of neurophysiology techniques including EEG, EMG, Evoked Responses, Intraoperative Neurophysiology Monitoring and Sleep Studies. The fellows will acquire the skills necessary to function independently as a clinical neurophysiologist either in an academic setting or in private practice.

Our program has trained over 90 specialists in clinical neurophysiology since 1972, when the program was founded by Omkar Markand, MD.

Our facilities:

IU Health Academic Center Neurology & Neurosurgery program (housed by Methodist and University Hospitals) has been ranked 15h in the country by US News and World Report in 2013.

IU Health Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is the only level 4 epilepsy center in the state of Indiana. The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is located in IU Health Methodist Hospital. IU Health Academic Health Center is also home to the first 24/7 Neurotelemetry program, one of the largest programs in the country. Our IU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is also an important site for several multicenter national and international clinical trials. These include Deep Brain Stimulation in Epilepsy (DBS – SANTE trial), Responsive Neurostimulator (RNS), and Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Epilepsy (ROSE trial) as well as antiseizure drug trials.

IU Health Neuroscience Center it is a new state of the art outpatient center that unites all the specialties that involve nervous system disorders – Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neuropsychology, and Neuroradiology. It is also home of the main outpatient Neurophysiology (EEG, EMG and Evoked Potentials) laboratory at IU Health.

Riley Hospital for Children is the only nationally ranked Pediatric Hospital in the state of Indiana. The fellows are exposed to a large variety and volume of neurophysiology tests performed across all pediatric age groups, from prematurely born neonates to teenagers.

Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center is a designated VA referral center with a broad spectrum of acute and chronic neurologic patients. The fellows rotate in the Neurophysiology EMG laboratory at this facility.

EEG track – two positions

The fellows in the EEG track have the following rotations

  • inpatient Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
  • Outpatient EEG and Neurotelemetry

The EEG track fellows attend half a day EMG/NCS every week. They participate also in the weekly Evoked potential reading sessions of intraoperative neurophysiology studies. The fellows attend the weekly Epilepsy Clinic at IU Health Neuroscience Center. They also participate in the OR functional brain mapping and neurophysiology monitoring (Electrocorticography). They may also attend reading sessions of adult and pediatric sleep studies.

EMG track – one position

The fellows rotate in the EMG labs at IU Health Neuroscience Center and at Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. They attend weekly EEG and Neurotelemetry reading sessions. They participate also in the weekly Evoked potential reading sessions of intraoperative neurophysiology studies. They may also attend reading sessions of adult and pediatric sleep studies. The EMG track fellow attends MDA clinic on a weekly basis.
